What is it?

Simply put, The Business Strategy Canvas is a strategic tool for building or showing a company strategy in a visual template. With the Business Model Canvas you are able to align the core business activities and their link to your value proposition using these simple steps:

When to use it?

A business model canvas should not be used instead of a business strategy. Instead, the BMC is used to visually show and summarize the most critical aspects of a business model, as well as to give centralized continuing clarity. Regardless of the state of your business, the BMC is an excellent tool to illustrate the current model of the business and should be revisited periodically. 

The Business Model Canvas is widely used among startups in particular, to help consolidate ideas around the key functions of your business.

How does it work? 

To start illustrating and tracking out your business model canvas here are the 9 key business segments you need to outline and what they each mean: 

  1. Customer Segments

Describe how you reach your clients, how you deliver your services, your various distribution channels, and how you deliver your value proposition.

  1. Value  Propositions

Summarize the several value propositions that distinguish your company from the competitors.

  1. Channels

Detail how your customers are reached, how your services are provided, your different distribution channels, and how your value proposition is delivered. 

  1. Customer Relationships

Outline and explain your primary customer relationships, ways you communicate with them, how these interactions differ between different types of customers, what different customer needs there are, and how much help each segment receives.

  1. Revenue Streams

Describe how your company makes money via your value proposition to customers.

  1. Key Activities

Compile a list of the core actions that enable your company to provide services and meet its value proposition.

  1. Key Resources

Make a list of the essential resources that your company relies on or requires to run and provide services.

  1. Key Partners

Make a list of the important partnerships that your company relies on for success. Include the resources or value that these relationships bring to your company.

  1. Cost Structure

Determine the key costs of running your business, then explain how these costs are related to other business functions.
